Since the much-needed rains have cleared for a bit, it sure has gotten colder. During rehearsal yesterday, we stepped outside with coats on, for a wee break. My keen ears immediately heard water pouring out of somewhere. We quickly learned that my friend’s well was now over-full where water was pouring out and over the top onto the ground. “It’s a good thing!” her landlord gleefully exclaimed. “That usually doesn’t happen until November — Good news!”
Our windows are now sweating + dripping from the chilly temperatures outside hitting the warm glass. However, i am appreciating having clear skies and a little of warm sun shining despite the cold frost that has come.
It’s now the time of Samhain and we have definitely crossed that threshold into the dark half of the year. It’s a time to gather the last of the harvest, begin to slow down, dream-journey within and regenerate, just as our blessed earth Mother is beginning to do the same.
I welcome this time of the witch’s / Celtic new year where the wheel of life begins again. I so welcome some good respite… as it’s been one busy time as i’m just plain tired and spent.
One thing i do miss very much since moving a year and a half ago is our hearth fire. Where we live now doesn’t have a wood stove. We now heat our home with either propane, electric baseboard or a small oil heater. When we had a wood stove, i used to offer prayers to the goddess Bridgid for her help to light the fire each morning. It became my morning ritual, every day and she did help. It was a wonderful co-creation together that i now miss as well.
I miss the healing radiant heat the fire brings. That warmth that goes straight into your bones deep and restores so beautifully. I really do miss it. However, i don’t miss the heavy lifting that goes with having to keep a wood stove… the wood is heavy and dirty and it got to the point i couldn’t chop wood as well as i used to.
However, i do hold great gratitude for a home that offers a safe roof over our heads and our love that continues to keep us warm and we have nourishing food to eat and blessed kith and kin of friendship love within our blessed community.
So, below, another poem from my upcoming book, ‘Learning to Dance with Stone’… and i wish you all a very happy new year as the wheel turns yet again.
